Madardal folk music band at Budapest Christmas Fair

Madardal folk band is one of the dozens of live concerts you can enjoy at the Christmas Markets in Budapest.

Madardal folk music band at Budapest Christmas Fair

Most of the concerts, which are absolutely fun with toddlers and little children take place at the Christmas Fair on Vorosmarty Square Budapest, but there are many concerts by the Basilica Xmas Fair too (St Istvan Bazilika), at weekends on the Obuda Advent Market, etc. The concerts last until December 24.

Usually the last concerts take place around 10-11 am, as do the children shows at Christmas (e.g. Nutcracker has several versions in the city of Budapest during the Advent period, from puppet shows, to puppet and actor to ballet shows)

Venue: Vorosmarty ter Budapest, District V (at the end of Vaci utca shopping street, close to the Chain Bridge)

Here is a bit of taster of the Madardal folk music band, and their special ways to invite the children and adults to dance around, which is good, it will make you feel warmer at the Xmas market! Just go with the flow. This video of the children folk concert was made in the 2011 Christmas Fair on Vorosmarty ter.

This is one of the nicest, though low key, video about the traditional Budapest Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square in Budapest, Hungary. The video film (made in 2011) captures the little stalls and the surrounding buildings and sights very well, but on the calmer side of the Xmas market, when there are fewer people at the popular fair. The Christmas markets in Budapest usually start to get crowded after working hours (5-6pm) on weekdays, and, of course, at the Advent weekends.
Vorosmarty Sq Christmas Fair is crowded despite the fact that the other big Xmas market by the St Stephen’s Basilica is literally five minute walk.

Tip: when is it worth visiting the Christmas Market in Budapest?
If you want to avoid the crowds, go in the morning, around 10am, or at 2pm the latest. This way, however, you will also miss the Christmas concerts on the square, which typically start at 5pm and 6.15pm on weekdays 9on Vorosmaty Square).
So the questions is what is more important to you: the calmer markets with less crowds or the live music and entertainment, and to see the buzzing night life of the Budapest Christmas markets.

As Erzsebet Ter (Elisabeth Square) is one of the central hubs of the city of Budapest, no wonder that there are several events, programs on this square during the Advent weeks before Christmas too.

First of all, there is a smaller scale Budapest Christmas Fair on Erzsebet Square, which seems to be merged with the Christmas stalls of the Fashion Street and then onwards to the big Budapest Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square. These three Xmas sights are in theory 3 separate events but fuse into a continuous Christmas festival by proximity.

Then there is the Budapest Design Terminal, a center of contemporary design with frequent installations, exhibitions and fairs. Budapest Design Terminal Christmas comes in early December every year.

Club Aquarium, the underground trendy club on Erzsebet Square offers various programs and concerts for the younger generation, with hiphop, rock, punk, world music, rap, etc. events. Some of them are directly Christmas themed, but most simply offer the daily clubbing experience as a focal point of Budapest downtown nightlife. Here is a nice photo of the club / bar at night in chilly December weather in Budapest (in summer picture this place with hundreds of people happily enjoying the summer evenings with drinks and chats)

In the background of the photo, you can see the domes and towers of the biggest Catholic cathedral in Budapest called the St Stephen’s Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika) where there is the Budapest Basilica Christmas market, within a few minutes walk from Erzsebet Square and Vorosmarty Square.

Kiraly Bath Budapest

Is Kiraly Bath, one of the most popular Turkish baths in Budapest, open during the Christmas holidays? Can you visit the thermal pools and enjoy the thermal and pool facilities?

Kiraly Bath Budapest

Kiraly Bath Budapest

Yes, Kiraly Baths is open at Christmas and on New Year too, though the opening hours are somewhat changed on the public holidays in winter.

Many Budapest travel guides say that Budapest is quiet or dead at Christmas, but this is not true any more.

Kirlay Baths, similarly to the two big baths in Budapest, Szechenyi Baths and Gellert Baths, is mostly open throughout the Christmas holidays, with the following opening hours:

Planned Christmas opening hours 2018

  • Dec 24: Closed
  • Dec 25: Kiraly Baths is open from 10 am to 6 pm
  • Dec 26: opening hours from 9 am to 8pm (all pools and the thermal section with saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools, thermal pools in Kiraly thermal Baths)
  • Dec 31: open from 9 am to 6 pm. Enjoy some amazing days in Budapest in a stunning historical building (the old Turkish baths have been expanded with more modern pools and facilities of course)
  • Jan 1: Kiral bath is open from 12 pm (noon) to 8 pm. Visiting ‘the Kiray’ is a nice way to get over the New Year’s Eve party symptoms (hangover, stress of the new year, etc.). As Kiraly has not been restored yet (unlike Rudas, Gellert or Szechenyi Baths) it is the most authentically ruinous and historical baths currently in the city of Budapest

Kiraly means King in Hungarian, say kee-raay

The opening times above have been basically the same at Budapest Baths for the last ten years or so. If you are planning your Budapest Christmas trip for 2018, you can count on the baths staying open on the public holiday dates in December and January in Hungary.
