Budapest Christmas Fairs: festive markets in Budapest

The Hungarian Museum of Applied Arts (Iparmuveszeti Muzeum) holds its annual Christmas market in December. The date of the Xmas Fair changes from year to year, but to cater for more visitors, the Christmas Market is usually held at one or two of the weekends during the Advent.

Christmas Market at the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest:

first weekend of December

The Christmas fair is simultaneous with an Advent Family Weekend at the Museum, with workshops and many programs for the children.

The program of the event and some photos will come soon. Please check back later.

Until then, take a look at some of the fantastic displays from the exhibitions of the Museum of Applied Arts (Iparművészeti Múzeum) on Ulloi Way, Budapest, District IX.

Hopp Ferenc Eastern Asian Museum (also managed by the Museum of Applied Arts) features beautiful objects from the Asian continent, like ceramics from China, Japanese wooden carvings

The museum will also have some Christmas decoration workshops (date not finalized yet). Some of the previous programmes

  • making Korean Christmas decors (yes, in Budapest, did we mention that Budapest is a cosmopolitan city?)
  • Origami girlands
  • and other Christmas decor with an Asian infusion

December 1 – 30 at the Nagyteteny Castle in Budapest

Another smaller museum in Nagyteteny Palace is also under the management of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. This nice 19th century palace on the outskirts of Budapest is in Nagyteteny district (District XXII, 9-11 Kastelypark Street). Each year in the Advent period, the Nagyteteny Castle gets a range of beautiful Christmas decor, plus you can see the old 19th century furniture and interior decor of Hungary (at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian empire)

In the month of December, from Tuesday to Sunday (except Christmas holidays), you can see the Christmas trees of designers, made or decorated by Hungarian designers.

On one of the weekends, you can also participate at a very children and family friendly program in Budapest, where the kids can also make Christmas tree decorations, you can buy some little gifts, etc.

This Christmas event is absolutely not touristy, as the castle itself is about an hour’s ride from the city center of Budapest with public transport (about 35 min by taxi)

Budapest Christmas Market on Bakats square District IX

One of the lesser known Christmas markets in Budapest is sometimes on Bakats Square, in Ferencvaros district, about 10 min ride from the city centre of Budapest.

This market has not been scheduled for this year.

While most tourists and locals head to the more crowded and big Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square or the Christmas Fair and Rink at St Stephens Basilica, there are many little Christmas markets that are worth a visit, especially if your hotel in Budapest is nearby that particular district.

Ferencvaros Christmas Market

Ferencvaros Christmas Market

What you will see is a more local Xmas fair, an artificial skating rink (plastic), a Christmas pyramid tree, street artists, wooden booths with Christmas gifts, and lots of locals happily coming together for a bit of winter fun, and celebratory atmosphere. Choirs sing, locals are attending the Advent masses of the church towering over Bakats square. The Church of St Francis of Assisi is a nice church, and if you feel like joining the locals, why not? Give it a try.

How to get to Bakats Square Christmas Market?

Bakats Square is a nice square right off the popular restaurant zone of Budapest in Raday street, which is packed with dozens of cafes, bars and restaurants right next to each other (including the first Michelin start restaurant of Budapest, Costes).
Bakats Square is also a short walk from Petofi Bridge, situated by the busy big ring road of Budapest, where tram 4 or 6 runs every 2 minutes. The closest metro station to Bakáts Square is on M3 blue metro line, Corvin Quarter metro station (Corvin-negyed). The inner streets of District IX are quite close to downtown Budapest, so you will not have to make a big detour, especially if you take the metro from Deak Sq (or Ferenciek Square or from Kalvin).

Ferencvaros Christmas Market is on Bakats Square, in the 9th district of Budapest. This Christmas market is a small scale and local fair visited by Hungarians who live in the neighborhood, and savvy Budapesters, who wish to steer away from the often crowded Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square and the Xmas Market on St Stephen’s Square (which by the evening hours, after 5pm, can get really full).

From Hotel Palazzo Zichy, Bakats Christmas Market is a ten min walk.

As Erzsebet Ter (Elisabeth Square) is one of the central hubs of the city of Budapest, no wonder that there are several events, programs on this square during the Advent weeks before Christmas too.

First of all, there is a smaller scale Budapest Christmas Fair on Erzsebet Square, which seems to be merged with the Christmas stalls of the Fashion Street and then onwards to the big Budapest Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square. These three Xmas sights are in theory 3 separate events but fuse into a continuous Christmas festival by proximity.

Then there is the Budapest Design Terminal, a center of contemporary design with frequent installations, exhibitions and fairs. Budapest Design Terminal Christmas comes in early December every year.

Club Aquarium, the underground trendy club on Erzsebet Square offers various programs and concerts for the younger generation, with hiphop, rock, punk, world music, rap, etc. events. Some of them are directly Christmas themed, but most simply offer the daily clubbing experience as a focal point of Budapest downtown nightlife. Here is a nice photo of the club / bar at night in chilly December weather in Budapest (in summer picture this place with hundreds of people happily enjoying the summer evenings with drinks and chats)

In the background of the photo, you can see the domes and towers of the biggest Catholic cathedral in Budapest called the St Stephen’s Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika) where there is the Budapest Basilica Christmas market, within a few minutes walk from Erzsebet Square and Vorosmarty Square.

Budapest has smaller and bigger Christmas Markets, which usually open around mid November and close at the end of December (December 31) each year. The two city central markets have been attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, and are the most spectacular.

Christmas Market Photo Gallery

The festive Christmas markets showcase young and old talents of Hungary, who really make their products with love, care, carrying on traditions of long years in glass blowing, knitting, wood carving, candle making, pottery, leather trade (belt making, bag making, shoe making, etc.), traditional Hungarian embroidery and lace work, etc. Don’t expect dazzling handicrafts, just nice and pleasant gifts, most of which make nice little presents, unassuming lovely gifts.

Budapest Christmas Markets – Traditional & Charming

What makes many of the Christmas markets really enticing and outstanding in Budapest is that there is a real focus on trying to preserve authentic Hungarian folk art, traditions and offer really good quality handcrafts rather than commercialized kitchy Christmas gifts.

Time Travel – Away from Commercial Showiness

So the Xmas fairs in Budapest are more about buying little hand made gifts, drinking mulled wines, nibbling Hungarian pastries (like the chimney shaped cylindrical ‘Kurtos kalacs’), eating traditional street foods (sausages, snacks, aroast chestnut, etc.), and having fun by meeting, mingling, chatting and listening to the nice Christmas concerts on the stages of the markets.
