Budapest Light Dome Interactive Exhibition in BioDome
This year, the Biodomes offer the experience of light, which will certainly help to chase the winter blues away and the early sunset hours setting in at about 4 pm. The giant glass bubbles will also slightly paint the sky in a sense as the curved, see-through shells of the domes (with walls and ceilings made of glass and metal) will be painted by stunning designs, artistic contemplations about the relation of humans with nature.
Lightdome returns / Light Exhibition 2
In 2024, from November 6 to December 8, the gigantic bubble shaped showcasing stunning installations by Hungarian and international artists. The exhibit centres on the theme of nature, spanning from microscopic life to the cosmos, and explores humanity’s connection to the natural world. Designed specifically for the Biodome’s unique spaces, the show includes interactive and symbolic light installations, creating an immersive experience that lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Organised by COLLOC Productions and Centrum Production with contributions from LaLuz Visuals and artist Karl Kola, Light Dome 2 (FenyDom) offers visitors a captivating blend of light and audiovisual art.
The installations at the Dome of Light explore the relationship between nature and humanity, offering visitors a fresh perspective. Some artworks invite interactive participation, allowing visitors to engage directly with light and space, while others use symbolism to highlight the complexity of our connection with nature. This exhibition aims to provide a unique visual and emotional experience, encouraging guests to reflect on their bond with the natural world. The Dome of Light offers a rare opportunity to see nature in a way that feels both personal and thought-provoking.
What is the budapest biodome?
The Biodomes were meant to extend the conservatory mission of the Zoo, expanding habitats for various fauna and flora, similarly to UK’s Eden Project biodomes where, inside the domes you can feel like stepping into a mini world, as if we were on Mars, a colony, where plants, animals, and cool displays all come to life. The construction of the domes are temporarily on hold due to lack of funds to finish them. But Budapest Zoo is creatively using the domes as a gigantic exhibition space (e.g. World Press Photo exhibition, or the Light Painting in early winter). The design of the glass – metal domes lets in tons of sunlight, so everything feels bright and alive, almost like being outside but safely protected. It’s not just a building – it’s like a whole natural environment wrapped up in a futuristic glass cocoon. We are looking forward to the completion of the original biodome concepts. Until then, enjoy the winter exhibitions!
