Budapest Aquincum Museum is the museum featuring Roman remnants in the city of Budapest (Aquincum was the Roman name of the border town, now found on the Buda side of Budapest).

Besides ancient ruins, mosaics, and tools, Aquincum Museum also throws a big Saturnalia party each Christmas to celebrate Xmas in real Roman style. Saturnalia Festival / ancient Christmas party takes place annually early December.

Please note that the Archaeological park of Aquincum in Budapest is only open from April 13 to October 31 (or in Roman style: IV.13 – X.31.)

The Holocaust Memorial Center is one of the top sights visited in Budapest. The opening hours during the Christmas holidays are as follows:

The Art Nouveau building of the Museum of Applied Arts is well worth a visit, even if you are not that into museums. Inside there are many beautiful design items (both temporary and permanent exhibitions).

The Museum of Applied Arts even has its own Christmas market, a design fair in Budapest for a short weekend during the Advent period.

Will the Museum of Applied Arts (Iparmuveszeti Muzeum) be open at Christmas in Budapest? How about the days during the Christmas holidays?

In 2012, the museum will only be open before and between the holidays, but not on the the days of holidays themselves

December 26: only the temporary exhibitions are open

December 31: only the temporary exhibitions are open from 10 am to 2 pm
January 1: Closed

In 2012, the temporary exhibition in the Hungarian National Museum, which is open for viewing on Dec 26 and Dec 31 too, is as the following (unfortunately the official website only shows the temp exhibitions in Hungarian for some reason – at the time of writing at least):

Hungarian National Library

The Hungarian National Library is not simply the biggest library in Hungary, but it is also the venue of smaller, niche exhibitions, e.g. it often hosts all sorts of arts exhibitions (not just related to books, reading), e.g. Herend porcelain exhibition, fine art exhibitions of contemporary Hungarian artists, vintage Hungarian posters are also often on display, etc.

The National Library is situated in the Buda Castle in Budapest by the Lions’ Courtyard, right next to the Budapest History Museum. In general, you can visit the library and its exhibitions with a special daily visitor pass for a few Euros. The question is if you can visit the library around Christmas and New Year’s time.

The opening hours of the Hungarian National Library (Orszagos Szechenyi Konyvtar) during the winter holidays are as follows:

From December 1 to December 23 the opening times of the biggest Hungarian library are as usual, after all, this is also the exam period in Hungarian universities when the library is usually the most visited by students, researchers, PhDs, etc.
